Sourcing locally produced ingredients is a high priority in Rutland, residents take full advantage of regular markets and Farmers’ Markets, and visitors too can discover the flavour and value of real local goods such as local cheeses, local bread, fresh meat and fish.
Many pubs and restaurants use the best of what is local and seasonal in their ever changing menu's so you can experience the best quality the region has to offer.
In Oakham, the Farmers’ Market takes place on the 3rd Saturday of every month, so if you want to reduce your food miles and be assured of the origins of your meat this is the place to shop. In between the Farmers Markets, regular markets still provide top quality local fruit, vegetables and other goods to local people. Oakham has a weekly market on Wednesdays and Saturdays plus Uppingham and Stamford's market days are Friday.
Rutland is home to some award winning meat producers, including Northfield Farm, near Oakham, which produces premium quality beef, lamb and pork and sells it in the farm shop. Also available is locally baked bread and regionally bottled beers.
Many of Rutland’s award winning restaurants and pubs such as The Olive Branch, near Clipsham use local produce wherever possible in their menus. This helps support the local producers and also helps to increase consumer confidence in the quality and source of the food they eat.
The Kings Arms at Wing has been awarded a prestigious 'Taste of the Region' award, standing out above many high quality eateries in the East Midlands. Their mouth watering menu changes daily and the ingredients are sourced from local businesses or hand made by the chief, even the tomato source is made in house!
