Come and take a look at one of Rutland's most famous and photographed landmarks, Normanton Church.
Built in 1826-29, St Matthews church as it was known at the time, was designed by Thomas Cundy, then architect to the Grosvenor Estate in Westminster. In the 1970’s when plans for the creation of Rutland Water were being finalised, it was decided to save the church from disappearing beneath the waves, a fate which befell many other buildings and homes.
The floor of the church was raised to bring it above the waterline, and the walls were waterproofed. It now sits proudly on a pier of stones on the shores of the reservoir and is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the county. It is open to visitors from April to October and is home to an exhibition complete with fossils and artefacts.
