Theatres

Theatre-goers are in for a treat when visiting Rutland, with top class performances in fabulous settings.

Tolethorpe Hall, Rutland’s open-air theatre dates back over 800 years, and is set in beautiful countryside adjacent to the River Gwash.  The Hall is home to Stamford Shakespeare Company, who purchased the Hall in 1977 and staged their first play in May of the same year.  Since then, Tolethorpe Hall has grown to become a revered open air theatre, with a dedicated following.  Annually, a range of performances are staged, and these are never cancelled due to the weather.  Performances for 2010 will take place from 7th June to 28th August, and include Othello, Much Ado About Nothing and Dad's Army.  Picnics on the lawn prior to the performance is a popular way to spend some time pre-performance; alternatively, a well equipped on site pre-theatre restaurant is available.  To visit their website click here.

Uppthearts is managed by Uppingham School and was developed to meet the needs of both the school and local community as well as help the arts to reach out to a wider audience.  Part of the Uppthearts offering is Uppingham Theatre, where drama, music, children’s theatre, and poetry are performed throughout the year. Rutland hosts its very own Festival of the arts every year and it's popularity increases with every season.

Oakham Festival and Uppingham Fringe is a celebration of the arts.  There is a vast array of theatre, dance, poetry, visual arts and music to be enjoyed throughout the event.  The top class performances take place at venues around the county including Oakham School and even local pubs. To visit their website for more information, click here.
