Cycling
Rutland lends itself perfectly to being explored on two wheels; cycle enthusiasts will already know about the Rutland to Melton CiCLE Race which took place on 25th April 2010. This race draws competitors from around Europe and is the biggest single Elite cycle race in the country. The race starts in Market Place Oakham and visits various locations throughout the county before ending just over the border in Melton Mowbray.
There’s no need to be a professional cyclist to enjoy the sport here though; simply cycle for pleasure and enjoy a tranquil ride through winding country lanes or around the shores of Rutland Water.
Cycling around Rutland Water
Visitors are welcome to bring cycles and simply set off, but if that isn’t an option, then it’s easy and convenient to simply hire a cycle from Rutland Cycling. The full route around the water, including the peninsular is 23 miles, however if you miss the peninsular out it is approximately 17 miles. There are many places around the route to stop and have a break, either in a country pub, a handy cafe, or if you've brought your own refreshments there are no end of great spots to stop and enjoy the views!
Cycle Hire Rutland Cycling has depots at both Whitwell and Normanton. The depot and store at Whitwell is one of the largest cycle shops in the UK and stocks a vast range of cycles for all the family at reasonable prices. The store also features accessories, clothing and a work shop for cycle repairs. It is staffed by dedicated cycle enthusiasts who are able to provide all the advice you need, 7 days a week. The Normanton depot, whilst smaller than Whitwell, offers the same level of service, and advice as well as an impressive range of cycles to choose from.
