Food is increasingly reason enough to visit a destination, and Rutland is no exception. Rutland is justly proud of its farming and agricultural background; it is thanks to this strong tradition of supporting local produce that there is an excellent selection of quality food and drink available now.
Residents already take full advantage of regular markets and Farmers’ Markets, and visitors too can discover the flavour and value of real local goods such as local cheeses, local bread, fresh meat and fish.
In Oakham, the Farmers’ Market takes place on the 3rd Saturday of every month, and in Uppingham it takes place on the 2nd Friday of every month. In between the Farmers Markets, regular markets still provide top quality local fruit, vegetables and other goods to local people.
Rutland is home to some award winning meat producers, including Northfield Farm, near Oakham, which produces premium quality beef, lamb and pork and sells it in the farm shop. Also available is locally baked bread and regionally bottled beers.
Many of Rutland’s award winning restaurants and pubs such as The Olive Branch, near Clipsham use local produce wherever possible in their menus. This helps support the local producers and also helps to increase consumer confidence in the quality and source of the food they eat.
