Drive to Rutland: Road Directions

You can drive to Rutland easily via main A roads and easy to follow motorway routes.
If you’re travelling by car, Rutland lies just off the A1, roughly halfway between London and York. The A47, from Leicester to Peterborough, also passes through the county allowing for easy access to either city.

Visiting the beautiful Georgian town of Stamford from Oakham is approximately a 20 minute drive away, taking you past gorgeous views of Rutland Water and the pretty villages of Whitwell and Empingham.

It will take you about 40 minutes to drive from Oakham to the city of Leciester, know for it’s football club and being the burial site for King Richard III. Oakham is also around 40 minutes drive from the cathedral city of Peterborough, where Tudor Queen Katherine of Aragon rests.

Public Transport in Rutland

Arriving in Rutland by Train

Oakham, the county town of Rutland, has its own railway station providing visitors with excellent rail connections to the rest of the country. Rail services are run by East Midlands Railway and CrossCountry with connections to Oakham available from Peterborough, Leicester, Nottingham and beyond.

From Oakham train station you can travel to Peterborough to connect with daily direct services to London King’s Cross and St Pancras International stations. The train services to Oakham allow you to leave London after work and be in the peaceful, rural countryside of Rutland in 1.5 – 2.00 hours, depending on which train service you use.
