Normanton: Church & Fishing

Normanton, for the iconic Church and Fishing Lodge (LE15 8AH)

Offering a cafe with one of the best views of the water, the Giant bike shop, access to Normanton Church and the respected Fishing Lodge, there are a lot of reasons to visit Normanton.

Normanton Church; A short walk away from the car park is the most famous icon of Rutland Water. Saved from demolition by public appeals, the building is now a beautiful landmark and is used as a venue for weddings, special occasions and concerts.

Normanton Church is also the location for the weekly parkrun, every Saturday at 9am and junior park run every Sunday (see the activities page for more details).

The Rutland Belle stops here on her route from Whitwell. There is also a refreshment kiosk at the church, and seasonal ice cream van, making it a great stopping point for cyclists and walkers.

    __________

The Waterside Cafe: with spectacular views across Rutland Water and a buffet breakfast from 8am, it’s a firm favourite with fishermen and walkers, also a great stop for coffee and cake or light lunches.

    Fishing in Rutland

Rutland Water offers some of the best fishing in the region, if not the UK, and is a true haven for anglers.

Trout in the reservoir can grow up to an amazing 15lbs, and huge Pike, that can grow up to 40lbs, lurk beneath the water. The reservoir not only attracts leisure anglers but also plays host to some top level competitions attracting discerning anglers from far and wide.

Fishing novices need not worry though – fly-fishing tuition is available from friendly guides at Rutland Water Fishing Lodge, offering everything that’s needed for a day’s fishing.  It’s not necessary to bring anything except perhaps some wellie boots!

Remember to obtain your fishing permit from local tackle shops or alternatively from the Vendor Huts at Normanton car park or at Whitwell car park at Rutland Water.  In addition to the normal fishing permits needed within Rutland, you can also obtain ‘Predator Permits’ (both annual and daily).  These have proved very popular and double-figure Pike, as well as Trout and Zander, are regularly caught at both Grafham and Rutland Waters.

Located at Normanton, The Fishing Lodge is able to supply everything that’s essential to get started in this exciting sport including tuition from professional guides, tackle and motor-boat hire.  Gift vouchers are available too.

    Nearby Fishing

Eyebrook Reservoir is surrounded by beautiful fields and dotted with spruce and willow trees.  This 400 acre water is a mature stream fed reservoir with easily accessible bank and good water levels year round.  The water is stocked with Rainbow and Blue Trout as well as the Native Brown Trout.  No other watersports take place here, so peaceful fishing is guaranteed.

Wing Hall Estate is set amongst acres of glorious Rutland countryside and has two good-sized, well-stocked lakes.  Wing Fishing Lakes offer a variety of fishing challenges to all levels and include general Coarse Fish, including Carp (Ghost and Common), Bream and Tench.  There are 20 pitches on each lake, offering space and privacy whilst you enjoy a great day’s fishing.  The largest reported catch was a 27lbs Carp (locally known as Nessie!) with regular catches of 15lb Carp.
