Time To Give Golf A Go?

Boasting numerous benefits, not least the opportunity it brings to spend social time outside, golf is even more popular than it has ever been.

Here in Rutland we’re lucky to have some fabulous golf courses with scenery so stunning that you might even be distracted from your game! So now that the warmer months stretch ahead of us and Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted, what better time to take up golf?

According to England Golf, the governing body for the game, the activity associated with playing a round of golf can help mental wellbeing by raising mood and lowering anxiety. It’s perhaps not surprising that last year, in the months whenever activity was permitted, golf saw a huge upswing in those taking up the sport.

Where to start

It is recommended that you learn under the guidance of a professional coach, be that in a one-to-one session or in a group (the latter is a great way to meet other beginners, make new friends and have a laugh!) Anyone can do it, children included! The first step is to make contact with a golf course and book a taster session.

Rutland Water Golf Club – With panoramic views of Rutland Water, golfers have a choice of nine par 3 holes on the Hambleton course or the challenging 18-hole Championship Normanton course. Beginners can take lessons on the driving range, which is ideal also for more experienced players to warm up (there are chipping and putting greens too). Expert advice is available from one of the Pros and the Pro-Shop stocks all the latest equipment.

Greetham Valley Golf Club offers one-to-one, duo and group lessons to novices, improvers and low handicappers. The club has two championship standard 18 hole golf courses, alongside a 9 hole par 3 Academy course, floodlit driving range and putting green.

Play and stay

As well as licenced bars and dining areas, both clubs have super accommodation, so why not book a golfing break? Greetham Valley has a choice of a contemporary hotel and eco-friendly lodges, while Rutland Water Golf Course offers eight luxury double/twin rooms and a self-catering three-bedroom cottage.
