Rutland’s February Half-Term Delights 2024

As the February half-term break approaches [between 10-25 Feb depending on schools], families in and around Rutland are presented with a fantastic opportunity to explore the scenic beauty and vibrant activities that this picturesque county has to offer. From outdoor adventures to cosy indoor experiences, Rutland provides the perfect backdrop for creating cherished family memories. Let’s delve into some delightful activities to make the most of your family time during this final winter break.

Rutland Water Nature Reserve:

For nature enthusiasts, a visit to Rutland Water Nature Reserve is a must. Embark on a leisurely stroll around the lagoons, enjoying the crisp winter air and observe the diverse birdlife. Bring along binoculars for bird watching in the many hides, with 25,000 ducks, geese and swans alongside wintering grebes, divers and egrets. Two visitor centre ran by the Leicetershire & Rutland Wildlife Trust and Anglian Water are found at Egleton and Lyndon, where interactive exhibits provide insight into the region’s wildlife.

Rutland Water:

Around the rest of the reservoir, the four main car parks of Normanton, Sykes Lane, Whitwell and Barnsdale all offer something different.

The welcoming Waterside Café at Normanton offers stunning views over the Fishing Lodge onto the water. There’s also a Specialized bike shop offering cycle hire. A short walk or scoot takes you to the iconic Normanton Church. If little legs can manage 2.3 miles over the dam to Sykes Lane, there’s the adventure play area, mini golf and visitor centre with refreshment kiosk, but don’t forget you’ve got the 2.3 miles back!

At Whitwell, The Harbour Café overlooks the creek where ducks will be ready to welcome you. Rutland Watersports hires Canoes, Kayaks, Row boats, Stand-up Paddleboards, Sailing Dinghies and Windsurfers all year round and there is an outdoor gym area. Specialized Cycle Store offers bike hire and sales seven days a week, with e-bikes becoming a popular way to get further on your jaunt.

The Full lap of Rutland Water is 23 miles including the peninsula, 17 if you cut it out, or you can head around it and then back the same way to Whitwell for a 15 miles route. A family trail of 8 miles takes you from Whitwell to Normanton and back.

Barnsdale is a quieter, hillier spot, with immediate access into the Barnsdale Wood for excellent nature exploring opportunities.

Coffee and a Play area:

Head over to The Dairy Barn Café near Whissendine, to enjoy a generous scoop (or three!) of Ferneley’s Ice Cream. Its play areas are a big hit with children, including a covered play tunnel for younger ones, an outdoor climbing frame, and even a 9-hole farm-themed adventure golf course!

 

Rutland Garden Village has a fun wooden play structure in the centre of their shopping courtyard, with The Cakery ideally situated right by it. Over at Wymondham Windmill you will find a puzzle trail in the woodland next to their play area and outdoor seating for the tempting tearoom.

At Welland Vale Garden Centre in Uppingham, café customers with younger children can enjoy a cuppa in (relative) peace while their offspring climb, slide, dive and rock in the free ‘Wiggly Worms’ soft play area.

Wonderland Walks in a Historic Setting:

Near to Rutland there are several charming castles and gardens that come alive with winter magic during February. Take a family walk through places like Belvoir Castle, Burghley House or Rockingham Castle. Bundle up in warm layers, enjoy the serene landscapes, and perhaps even indulge in a family picnic with hot chocolates all round.

Belvoir Castle’s impressive adventure play area reopens between 12-25 February, where you could enjoy one of their Snowdrop walks around the impressive gardens.

There are plenty of family-friendly walking paths to explore at Fineshade Wood, as well as kids’ playgrounds and an art gallery. Pack up a picnic or grab a tasty snack at Grounds Café and Cycle Hire, where you can enjoy a freshly brewed coffee.

Oakham Castle and Market Town Exploration:

Discover the rich history of Rutland by exploring Oakham Castle. Take a guided tour to learn about its medieval architecture and history. Afterward, wander through the quaint market town of Oakham, exploring local shops, cafes, and capturing the essence of Rutland’s traditional charm.  There’s an excellent play area and skate park in nearby Cutts Close.

Unique Exhibits at Rutland County Museum:

Take a break from the cold and check out the many displays and exhibits that the Rutland County Museum has to offer. This provides a perfect opportunity for kids to learn about the local history and culture while engaging in hands-on activities.

UK’s Best Value Escape Rooms:

Get all the family working together to solve a range of puzzles at One Way Out Escape Rooms; it’s recommended for anyone aged 8 and over, a great indoor activity to enjoy.

Get hands on with Furry Friends:

For the animal lovers amongst us why not have some animal therapy this half-term. Ganders Goat Walking provides you with a farm experience and the opportunity to walk some goat friends. Rutland Farm Park are open all year round for you and your family to explore their tracks and meet and feed their wonderful and friendly animals. Sacrewell Heritage Farm and Country Centre has plenty to keep both adults and children busy, with animals to meet, outdoor spaces to discover, a recently restored 18th century watermill and a large indoor soft play centre.

 

Thomas the Tank Engine at Nene Valley Railway:

Nene Valley are getting ready for a special half term treat to travel behind Thomas on his branch line on 17, 18, 24 & 25 February. Travelling from Wansford to Yarwell and back, the train then continues to Peterborough hauled by a bigger locomotive or our Pacer.
